Topdressing maintains a healthier higher quality sports field which is also a safer surface to play on. The golf course industry has long known that topdressing will help breakdown thatch, smoothes play surfaces, and helps with infiltration of surface water. Filling aeration holes with topdressing improves drainage and root zones due to less compaction that benefits the turf’s health. More and more sports turf managers have begun topdressing programs for their sports turf field seeing improved fields over non topdressed fields.
Above we are topdressing a football field with sand.
Below we are topdressing a soccer field with compost.
The granular size of topdressing sand in very important, it should be medium to course. This provides good drainage to keep your fields in play. Sand can also be blended with compost or peat humus. The organic source provides nutrients beneficial in maintaining healthy turf retention without compromising the compaction resistance of a sandy growing medium.
